Bethencourt Augustin 1758-1824
Native of the Canary Islands, mechanical engineer, worked in Russia from 1808. Founder and first director of the Communications Institute. Built the Manege (Riding School) in Moscow, Nizhegorodskaya Fair pavilions, bridges in St.Petersburg. Due to his patronage was introduced to Court Auguste de Montferrand (1786-1858), the architect of the St. Isaac's Cathedral whose columns were set upright by a special device invented by Bethencourt. The unique gravestone in the form of a six-meter cast-iron column was erected to the design of A. Montferrand in 1825.
